About This Show

TeatroStageFest’s Encuentro is a socio-political and artistic conference that runs from 1pm until 6pm, with a suggested performance of Amarillo to follow.

The program for includes:

U.S. Latino Artists Reinterpret the Border
A panel discussion will provide students, educators, artists and general audiences with a greater understanding of each artist’s unique artistic process through collaborations with professional actors and new immigrant communities of New York. This includes a screening of Alex Rivera’s uplifting documentary The Sixth Section, which sheds a positive light on the lives of migrant workers in Upstate New York, and the astounding achievements of this new community of Mexicans who came together to make a difference in the lives of their loved ones left behind. This would also feature Margarita Espada, Artistic Director of Teatro Yerbabruja, and German Jaramillo, Artistic Director of ID Studio NY, describing their experiences in developing original theater productions on the themes of the border, in collaboration with both professional actors and day laborers living in Staten Island and Long Island, NY, who had never performed on stage before.

Participants will have an opportunity to meet in an informal setting.

At the Crossroads of a Dream: The Impact of the DREAM ACT on a new generation of young Americans
A select group of panelists will explore the short and long term impact of this new law, and the services that are in place in New York to ensure that today’s youth is empowered and has access to educational tools that will enable these young men and women to flourish as new Americans.
