About This Show

In ‘Strange Tales of Liaozhai’ artist and master puppeteer Hanne Tierney brings to life a full stage of objects using an intricate counterweight system containing over 100 strings, which she manipulates in full view of the audience. Expressive silks, lanterns and bamboo poles become central players in two emotionally charged tales, adapted from 18th century supernatural Chinese folk tales compiled by scholar Pu Songling. A love story springs forth through Tierney’s accomplished abstract puppetry, while a tale of
magic pigeons is depicted through hand-drawn projections created by Hannah Wasileski. This work also features original compositions by Jane Wang, which she performs live on toy pianos, double bass and self-constructed instruments.
