Society Unbound: A Verse Drama Trilogy

The 92nd Street Y Unterberg Poetry Center presents the premiere of SOCIETY UNBOUND, a verse drama trilogy examining the complex evolution, subtle undermining and violent overthrow of human society. The trilogy is comprised of;
Prometheus Bound: Internationally acclaimed theatre, film and opera director Jonathon Miller, who directed the play’s premiere in 1967, directs this revival reading of American poet Robert Lowell’s version of Aeschylus’ classic drama. The play brings into a contemporary idiom, Aeschylus’ drama of the Titan punished by Zeus for trying to help mankind. Monday, March 27th at 8pm
The Bacchae: This will be the first New York reading of American poet C.K. Williams’ extraordinary new version of Euripides’ masterpiece about Pentheus, the young king of Thebes, driven mad and destroyed by the god Dionysis. Monday, April 3 at 8pm
The Riot Act: The Abbey Theater’s Judy Friel directs the first New York reading of Northern Irish poet Tom Paulin’s dynamic adaptation of Sophocles’ Antigone. The play, a universal parable of political oppression and resistance, brings to life the battle of the wills between Antigone and her uncle King Creon over the burial of her dead brother.
