Sheldon Harnick: Collector’s Items (Other People’s Lyrics), Part 2

In a Broadway career spanning more than half a century, Sheldon Harnick collaborated on some of musical theater’s most beloved shows, including Fiddler on the Roof, Fiorello and She Loves Me. In a follow-up to last season’s hugely popular exploration of some of Harnick’s favorite lyrics, he returns to the 92nd Street Y’s Lyrics & Lyricists with Collector’s Items (Other People’s Lyrics), Part 2.

This year, Harnick once again teams up with artistic director Rob Fisher and turns his attention to the lyrics that inspired him to be a songwriter. He reflects on such classics as “A Fine Romance” by Dorothy Fields, “Let’s Do It” by Cole Porter, “There’s No Business Like Show Business” by Irving Berlin, “When I’m Not Near the Girl I Love” by Yip Harburg and “Baby It’s Cold Outside” by Frank Loesser. But he also discusses fine examples of lyric writing in lesser-known songs by Alan Jay Lerner, George Forrest and Robert Wright, Hugh Martin, and Meredith Wilson, among others.

The cast features Nancy Anderson (A Class Act, Wonderful Town, Fanny Hill, and the London production of Kiss Me Kate), John Ellison Conlee (The Full Monty, The Constant Wife, 1776), Maureen Brennan (currently working on a revue of Harnick’s music) and George Dvorsky (She Loves Me at the Paper Mill Playhouse).
