About the Show
On December 8, the African American Policy Forum will commemorate the #SayHerName campaign with a ritual event called Bridges & Gatherings. The centerpiece of the evening is a staged reading Say Her Name: The Lives That Should Have Been, inspired by interviews with members of the #SayHerName Mothers’ Network. The cast features an acclaimed 15-member group of actors including Lisa Arrindell, Crystal Dickinson, Jon Michael Hill, Moses Ingram, Qween Jean, Adrienne C. Moore, Margaret Odette, Goldie Patrick, Alicia Pilgrim,
Tonya Pinkins, Grace Porter, Taji Senior, DeWanda Wise, and Kim Yancey.
Written in collective by Kimberlé Crenshaw, Julia Sharpe-Levine, a.k. payne, and G’Ra Asim, the play collides a present day reality of six Black mothers mourning with an imagined plane of connection, community and care, rather than surveillance.
The reading will be followed by a talkback moderated by Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw. Two-time Tony Award winner Kara Young will join as emcee.
