About This Show

Romanian expatriate singer Sanda Weigl has quite a personal history: She first learned gypsy songs as a child and found early success as a child star on Romanian television. Later she was a rock singer in East Berlin, and was tossed into prison for protesting against the communist regime. In 1990 she moved to the USA and she quickly became known as the “Gypsy Queen of Downtown New York”.

Sanda & Orchestra have just arrived back in the states from touring Romania where Sanda celebrated a triumphant comeback in her native country w/ her unique interpretations of Romanian Gypsy and German cabaret songs… and on Sunday at Joe’s, she’ll take the stage with a new group of musicians:

Shoko Nagai on the piano, accordion, guitar and arrangements, Stomu Takeishi on bass, and Satoshi Takeishi with percussion. These musicians serve as the perfect balance beam for Sanda’s thunderous, mesmerizing and sinfully spooky vocal “Gypnastics”.
