About the Show

Turning to politics and national identity, the Metropolitan Playhouse revives Year One of the Empire.

In 1973, noted scholar Elinor Fuchs and historian Joyce Antler painted a new portrait of the American actions in the Philippines, a forgotten conflict in 1899 that planted the seeds of American hegemony in the global sphere and tore US popular opinion asunder. With humor and horror, Year One of the Empire is drawn entirely from documentary sources that remain as illuminating and as startling today as they did 30 years — and 100 years — ago.
