About This Show

What Comes Next is a quirky, modern American road story set on the wagon train trail in the latter days of the Westward Expansion. Julia, a skilled outfitter running her own cross country wagon train business, has her hands full leading pioneers through the wilderness and herself through a mid-life crisis. Blazing trails has always been easy for her, but it’s not what it once was. Now her lead scout and lover, unhappy with the way the US is heading, wants to move to Canada. Armed with advice from some unusual friends including Tammy Wynette and Ulysses S. Grant, Julia must find a new path — proof that all destiny is not exactly manifest.

“Popeson…proves to be an imaginative and visionary writer.” — nytheatre.com

“Pamela A. Popeson has written a potentially fascinating examination of the loneliness of the trailblazer in What Comes Next — and especially how lonely things can be when that trailblazer is a woman.

Popeson delivers this tale in a quirky manner … mixing time frames so that anachronisms become a leitmotif of the play.

…the script is graced with some arrestingly poetic monologues and trenchant dialogue. A solid cast of nine, under the lively direction of Lorca Peress, makes the play’s characters quite credible. As Julia, Marin Gazzaniga turns in a fetching portrait of a vivaciously independent woman caught in midlife crises, and she is nicely matched by Stephen Clarke as Julia’s weathered macho trail scout.” — Backstage
