Unisex Salon: Over The Rainbow Under The Bridge

About the Show

James Coppola’s weekly freak show, Unisex Salon (practically under the Williamsburg Bridge) goes Over The Rainbow Under The Bridge to celebrate the premiere of “petite and glamorous” gogo dancer Trina Rose’s short film A Yellow Brick Road. A short stage adaptation starring all of the infamous UNISEX Unitards follows the screening. Expect to see flying monkeys, witches, lions, tinmen, scarecrows, munchkins and rainbows of all shapes and sizes jump out of a magical cake as the Unitards wish Trina a happy birthday.

A Yellow Brick Road focuses on a theatre company, (deciding to add a little spice to their traditional productions) contracted non-traditional casting companies to put on a gender-bending version of the play The Wizard of Oz. Backstage before the performance, Glinda, a young pre-operative transsexual queer theorist dresses for her role and argues with the stage manager who insists she mark “Male” or “Female” on the payment form. Soon after, Glinda finds a friend in Maggie, who she assumes to be Glinda’s under-study and another pre-operative transsexual like herself. In actuality, Maggie is a female little person who is assigned the role of “Munchkin #7” and a barrier between herself and Glinda fosters tension and the miscommunication which ultimately leaves the actors questioning their own sense of Self and reality.
