Sonnet Repertory Theatre, now in its sophomore season, continues a rigorous pursuit of classic theatre for the modern planet with a unique take on Shakespeare’s intense The Winter’s Tale. With a tidy retelling of this tragedy/festive comedy/pastoral, set in a Sicilia that is the Hamptons circa 1977, and a Bohemia that is an East Village pocket park sixteen years later, SRT aims to embrace the saga and extract the human that is The Winter’s Tale. According to director Shirley Serotsky, “The play speaks to an audience in a way that’s surprising, immediate, heightened and desperately, ridiculously human. Winter’s Tale refuses to fit neatly into any one category. Just when you think you have figured it out Shakespeare throws in a twist that leaves you wondering if maybe, like life, it is not something that is meant to be solved, but rather enjoyed, reveled in and moved by.”
Appropriate for ages 16 and up.
