About This Show

At the dawn of the atomic age, before Boeing Boeing and Doris Day rom-coms,
there was The Tender Trap, a light sex comedy about a New York bachelor and the various women seeking to marry him. The play later became a hit movie with Frank Sinatra and Debbie Reynolds. This will be the first New York production of The Tender Trap since its 1954 Broadway premiere. The production will be an Equity Showcase (AEA Approval pending), and will be directed by David Storck.

In the first New York revival of the 1954 Broadway comedy The Tender Trap, unlikely ladies’ man Charlie Reader revels in the attention paid to him by his numerous female friends. But his comfortable world suddenly goes off-kilter when an unhappily married friend casts his eyes on one of Charlie’s ladies, while a new woman in the picture has her own plans for Charlie. Written by Max Shulman and Robert Paul Smith and presented by Retro Productions, the play is a gentle satire on the marital perceptions of the 1950’s, where “compromise” is another term for “settling for second best”; where knowing who you are and what you really want is the most important gift of all; and where wall-to-wall carpeting is something all men (married or otherwise) look upon with great fear.
