Kings County Shakespeare Company will kick off its
summer 2003 season with The Rover by Aphra Behn, directed by Liz Shipman.
Set during Carnival, where misrule is the rule, the play’s characters rove, drink, carouse, and revel freely, often
in disguise. Lines of power in rank and gender are blurred. The rover of the title, Willmore, makes advances to every woman who happens into his path, and
ultimately finds himself caught between the two most fascinating: Hellena, a
wealthy and witty heiress, and Angelica Bianca, a powerfully charismatic
courtesan. Happy to have them both, this “rover” learns that these ladies
have wills of their own and will only have him on their own terms.
There will be an additional matinee performance Saturday 06/21 at 2:00 PM.
