Lanford Wilson’s haunting, suspenseful drama chronicles a month in the fictional small town of Eldritch – a town on the verge of disappearing. It’s a story about human lives trapped in desperate circumstances, a town where the main industry has died and where hopelessness and decay abound.
The plot revolves around the sexual assault of a teenage girl, a shooting, and the murder trial that follows, but Wilson’s innovative use of overlapping dialogue makes the people of the community the real focus of the play.
The Rimers of Eldritch explores themes of intolerance and Bible-belt prejudice, but at its heart lies a story about loneliness, fear, and the desperate acts those feelings ignite. It’s an all too human story – touching and terrifying at the same time.
