About This Show

The action in Shaw’s only farce centers on the Ibsen Club, a hive of advanced thought where men and women meet on equal terms; the ladies behave like perfect gentlemen and no womanly woman or manly man is allowed. Shaw uses the battle of the sexes to debunk the double standards of late 19th century society, creating a delightful spoof of the New Emancipated Woman, doctors, critics, pretentious intellectuals — and even idealists, hypocrisy, vivisection and the generation gap. Many of the social issues Shaw tackles in The Philanderer strongly resemble those of today.
