The Girl Friend is one of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart’s earliest shows. The young songwriters teamed again with librettist Herbert Fields for this story of a six-day bicycle race in which the long shot is a farm boy who trains by attaching his wheel to a butter churn. The bad guys try to rig the race. The bad girl tries to rig the boy. Guess who wins in both cases?
