The Cyclone

Under an ominous sideshow guide inspired by the gritty yet wildly charismatic Coney Island, The Cyclone compares the human condition to surreal, circus-like variety acts. A Ring Master played by Tory Schaefer guides the audience through several dance pieces and brief moments of text highlighting numbers, which are seperated into 3 rings entitled Train Animals, Clowns and Freaks and Juggling and Balance. Set to pre-recordedmusic as varied as the circus itself, from Debussy’s “Danse Profane” to the jazz composition by Charles Mingus “Don’t Be Afraid, The Clown’s Afraid Too,” the ensemble portrays a gallery of oddities where the line between real life and circus characters is continually blurred. A daily grinding routine to elevator music, a thrashing desperate singles scene, destitute hobo clowns in an insufficient soft shoe, the mental monstrosities ballet, commercial hypnotism and an aerialist on the wire are all part of the ride, this rollercoaster called life. Directed and choreographed by cofounders Joanna and Ryan Greer.
