About the Show

“I must become Caligari!” exclaims the protagonist of the new musical adaptation of the silent horror classic The Cabinet of Caligari. And he
succeeds, in this sometimes creepy, sometimes dissonant, but highly entertaining stage version by Canadians Douglas Hicton (book, music, and lyrics) and Richard Lawton (book), premiering at the 2nd Annual Midtown International Theatre Festival.

The story concerns Caligari, a fairground charlatan who exhibits a man who, he claims, has been sleeping for 25 years. In fact, Caligari sets Cesare loose at night, to go out and kill anyone who has slighted Caligari during the day. Three young people get involved in the murder plot, as it turns out that Caligari has a secret identity — and a secret identity within his secret identity. David Leidholdt directs, with Brett Kristofferson as music director.
