About the Show

Written in 1780, The Belle’s Stratagem was one of the most popular plays playing in London stage at the end of the 18th century. This comedy about manners, sexual morals, and gender roles brings together two stories: Letitia Hardy’s paradoxical scheme to win the heart of her betrothed, Doricourt; and the introduction of naive Lady Frances Touchwood to fashionable London society, to the great consternation of her jealous husband, Sir George. Filled with sexual escapades, sparkling wit, backstabbing gossip, corruption of virtue, and marriage plots – with a strikingly modern perspective on gender and sexual politics – Hannah Cowley’s play is sure to excite contemporary audiences. Davis McCallum directs for the Prospect Theater Company.
