New York City
In this dark absurdist comedy, playwright Edward Albee makes a mockery of suburban living in order to highlight the collapse of the American value system. As Mommy and Daddy, a sexually repressed couple, await the arrival of their mystery guest, a spry, snippety Grandma wanders around the living room acting as a constant reminder of the past. When Mrs. Barker of the Bye-Bye Adoption Service arrives, confusion ensues and it is discovered that nothing is as it seems. The American Dream is a hilarious, satirical look at a family searching for the seemingly unattainable goal of satisfaction and finding it in the strangest of places.
