Stock Xenophobia is an evening of three award-winning plays — Freetown, Othello (bye bye) and Answer Me.

"Othello (bye bye)"

Dood Paard presents the classic Shakespearean work dealing with jealousy, love and racism in a fresh light, with just two actors and one technician. The new translation gives the piece a contemporary tone while remaining close to the original, resulting in an intelligent, bold performance. Paard’s work presents double layers in which themes, such as jealousy and xenophobia, become uncomfortably apparent.

"Freetown"

In this production selected for the Dutch Theater Festival, three white, well-to-do women meet in a West African resort, seizing the perfect opportunity for encounters with dark young men. The women are quite aware of what they’re in for, and are confident consumers for whom happiness and pleasure are rights. Why shouldn’t you be allowed to enjoy a few weeks of unrestrained pleasure after a year of hard work in the barren North?

"Answer Me"

Answer Me consists of many questions — some strange, some friendly, some disconcerting. The story is not straightforward, and character identities are not always obvious. The story’s sense of confinement may mean it’s set in a camp, jail, or perhaps a normal, everyday situation where one feels cornered by someone else, or possibly, themselves.
