About This Show

Sounds Like Now is an innovative music festival featuring some of the most respected experimental musicians/performers, including Muhal Richard Abrams, Robert Ashley, Thomas Buckner, Jin Hi Kim, MacArthur “Genius” Prize awardee George Lewis, Alvin Lucier, Roscoe Mitchell, Phill Niblock, Pauline Oliveros, Carl Stone, Kato Hideki, Ikue Mori, Jim O’Rourke, Zeena Parkins, and DJ Tamara. It is hard to imagine today’s DJ/dance culture or hip hop scenes, noise rockers or much of the sonic textures heard on film/video games or even TV commercials existing had these experimental musicians not done the hard work. They have been the first to embrace computers, sampling, new sonic vocabularies, extended time frames, and almost everything else that has contributed to the lurching forward of the dominant contemporary pop musical culture.
