About This Show

Seafaring is a play based on Anglo Saxon poems dealing with the sea. The ensemble piece dramatizes four complete Old English works—”The Seafarer,” “The Ruin,” “The Whale,” and “The Wanderer,” along with excerpts from “Andreas,” “Christ 2,” and “Genesis B.” The play shows sailors working on board a ship in the 10th century and recounting their reasons for going to sea.

The texts of the poems, dating from the early Middle Ages, have been newly-translated by Jeff Dailey, a scholar of Old English literature and an experienced stage director and playwright. He has assembled the poems into a scenario where the texts are combined with music and dance.
