About This Show

The National Black Theatre’s Institute of Action Arts presents Sango, Lord of Thunder, written and directed by David D. Wright, in association with Orisha Tales Repertory Radio Theatre Company.

This dance drama is a folktale that reveals the magical richness and seductive power of one of the most popular and powerful gods in the Yoruba tradition. Sango, with his fiery wrath, is the voice of authority that brings with him the power to remove all internal conflict in personal, family and community relationships. It is a contemporary dance drama that depicts the present day conflict between father and son. In the play, it becomes the mother’s responsibility to reveal to her son who his real father is. As the story unfolds we all get to participate in cultural values that restore love, family unity and bring a new family life to all people in the community.

A cast of 20 performers and musicians come together as a community to weave a seductive and hypnotic folktale that reaches our feelings and touches our emotions, clearing up and making way for the challenges of family to be resolved. Sango, Lord of Thunder is a powerful and entertaining way to instill the cultural values that impact all our core beliefs about an authentic cultural identity. It piques the curiosity and poses new questions about what’s next for African American people. Come to engage and interact in this provocative Ritual Theatre.
