About This Show

Must a woman maintain her chastity after her husband’s death? How does society react if a woman who becomes notorious for her debauchery is the widow of a national hero? Set at the dawn of the Westernization of Japan in the Meiji period (1868-1912), the story of this award-winning, delightfully satirical comedy follows the notorious Oryo after the assassination of her husband, Ryoma Sakamoto (a freedom-fighting samurai credited for leading Japan’s transformation from feudalism into a modern unified nation in the mid 19th century). Written by Koki Mitani, one of the most sought-after comedy playwrights in Japan, this production of Ryoma’s Wife, Her New Husband and Her Lover stars renowned TV actor B-saku Sato and Mitsuru Hirata.
