About This Show

The Raw Material series is a juried program that searches for new stars in the galaxy of New York choreographers. Dance artists are offered an opportunity to experiment with new methods for crafting their work, and DNA audiences are offered an opportunity to witness the brightest new ideas in choreography.

In Dorothy by Celia Rowlson-Hall, Dorothy is in Baghdad instead of Kansas and by the power of her red shoes, lands in New York. On the streets, she encounters "good" witches, characters without heart, brains, or courage as well as an omniscient psychic. Daniela Hoff/HoffTanzt presents Soliloquy-Solo for Two which deals with two different perspectives of the same situation, two different worlds existing next to each other. It brings the question of what happens when the point of view changes and the two different dimensions meet or overlap. Johari Mayfield brings a movement and sound exploration in which dance and rhythm are inextricably laced and communicate physical and psychological imprisonment in L’Enfermee (The Enclosed). In Cuttlefish Megan Mazarick uses an explosively detailed movement vocabulary combined with chaotic projected environment to create incessantly shifting worlds in her solo. Third time dreaming is a collaboration between choreographer Adrienne Westwood, composer Jim Briggs III, and members of VIA Dance Collaborative who use original physicality to create striking imagery, suggesting recollections of the familiar and the transcendent.
