About This Show

Can a person of many cultures ever truly belong anywhere? That’s the question one woman must face in On the Couch with Nora Armani, part of the Fifth Annual Midtown International Theatre Festival. François Kergourlay directs.

Tired of being told by casting directors she’s either “too ethnic” or “not ethnic enough,” Nora Armani, an actress, singer, dancer and poet, has created her own one-woman show. However the unexpected appearance of a long-ago love causes Nora to veer from the planned script and embark instead on an intensely personal look into her own past and family heritage. Over the course of the evening, she recounts her family history – such as her grandparents being expelled from Armenia by the Turks; her growing up in Nasser’s post-revolution Egypt; learning the facts of life (those are NOT keys in the pocket of the teenage boy you are dancing with); and immigrating to America. Throughout the performance, one theme remains constant – the need to belong. Yet in all her travels, from Giza to Hollywood, to the Scottish Highlands, France and beyond, there’s always that feeling of not being able to find her place.
