June 27, 1969 a routine police raid on a popular gay bar ignited a struggle for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender civil rights that continues to this day . Known as the Stonewall Rebellion, it is the focus of Carol Polcovar’s My Mother Told Me I Was Different: Voices from the Rebellion.
Ms. Polcovar spent several years researching the first night of the rebellion, interviewing eyewitnesses and participants. From her research and interviews, the playwright shaped a docudrama that explores what happened when a routine police raid burst into an angry demonstration of resistance that forever changed the fabric of our society. My Mother Told Me I Was Different is the story of that night in the words of the people who of lived it. David Gaard directs.
