About This Show

Machinal tells the story of Helen–a young woman, an ordinary young woman–who is trapped by a nagging mother, a mindless job, a loveless marriage, and an unwanted child. After a brief affair with a mysterious stranger, Helen finds a way out of her soulless existence: murder. Machinal is loosely based on the sensational 1927 trial of Ruth Snyder who, along with her lover Judd Gray, murdered her husband. A year later, Snyder became the first women to be put to death in the electric chair in New York State.

With a haunting design that emphasizes the crushing monotony of the
industrial world, Machinal is a provocative look at an increasingly
impersonal world–perhaps more vital now than it was nearly 75 years ago when it was written.

One Year Lease, founded by Vassar College graduates in 2000, is a New York based theater company dedicated to revitalizing classic texts. They have created a community of American and international artists who work together on productions that are performed both in the United States and abroad. After two successful European tours, OYL returns to New York to work on this modern classic that attacks our very ideas of individualism. Recent productions include Look Back in Anger (Abingdon Theater Arts Complex, New York); Oresteia (Theater for the New City, New York; Deree College Amphitheater, Athens, Greece; Theatro Alfredo Chiesa, Milan, Italy; Antigone (The Raw Space, New York; Theatro Technis, Athens, Greece) and Miss Julie (Sanford Meisner Theater and The Pulse Theater).
