New York City
A Yangtze Repertory Theatre of America production
presented by Theater For The New City, Love In Tears And Laughter is an ill-fated love story set in 1920s Beijing. It is based on the classic novel by Zhang HunShui, and adapted and directed by Joanna Chan.
Warlord politics, parliamentary corruption, anti-communist purges and Guomingdang censorship run rampant across the fledgling Republic. Into this chaotic setting comes Fan, an innocent and well-meaning university student. Fan crosses paths with three young women, each from wildly different stations in life. Each in turn falls for the young idealist, and each in turn is denied happiness by forces outside of her control. The trials they face reveal the horrors of life in a land without rule of law, and the despair born from struggling to escape a seemingly unalterable fate.
