Long Time Passing

Theater for the New City presents Long Time Passing, written and directed by Barbara Kahn. The play is a fable set in the ruins of Central Park during an endless war. There are no “sides” in the play and no politics, only the story of war’s devastation on all living things, both human and animal. And in keeping with the human (and animal) spirit, the play contains endless hope in this endless war.

In Long Time Passing, two women soldiers meet in the park and fall in love, an aspiring actress looks for the only theater still open in wartime, a street mime seeks safety in the happy place of his childhood, an elderly peddler travels freely between armies, pigeons no longer fly for fear of being shot and eaten by soldiers, and an orphaned squirrel bridges the communication gap between animals and humans. Long Time Passing brings together this assortment of characters, survivors who learn to get along with each other. As the actress says, “I have no enemy but war itself.”
