About This Show

The result of an unusual collaboration between David Parsons, the world-renowned modern dance choreographer of The Parsons Dance Company, and Fred Newman, the off-off Broadway political theatre director and playwright of the Castillo Theatre, License to Dream is a dance play with music performed by a cast of six young hip-hop performers from the All Stars and six modern dancers from The Parsons Dance Company.

Set on Long Island, License to Dream explores what happens when young people from one of New York’s poorest neighborhoods, East New York, Brooklyn, attend Camp Development, a fictional East Hampton summer camp. In dance and song, the play explores the different — and at times clashing — attitudes of the East New York youth and the East Hampton camp counselors. On opposite ends of Long Island, East New York and East Hampton may be only 90 miles apart, but the distance between the people is much greater. What happens when these attitudes wind up together on the lawn of the ‘big house’? Come to License to Dream and find out.
