About This Show

Using home-movie, interviews, letters and tapes from friends alongside recordings of world events, Instructions for Forgetting is an intimate documentary performed in a space strewn with video monitors, VCRs, cables and untidy stacks of videotapes. Part intimate essay, part fragmentary narrative, this surprising and comical performance maps the links between personal history and the broader histories called culture and politics. Images rewind, narratives fast forward, slithers of the past are caught in freeze frame or drawn out in an agony of slow motion. A child does magic tricks. Dogs play in a New York apartment. Cartoon rain shimmers on a white sky. A woman strips in Barnsley. The sea shimmers in Beirut. It explores video as an artifact, as a container of image and memory, and as an occasion for speculation, fiction, interpretation and storytelling. Perfomed by Tim Etchells.
