Oslo Elsewhere brings a unique pairing of Henrik Ibsen’s Rosmersholm and contemporary Norwegian playwright Jon Fosse’s Deathvariations, both in new American translations, under the title Henrik Ibsen + Jon Fosse: Norway Meets New York . Never before performed in the United States, Fosse’s Deathvariations tells the story of how a mother finds herself through the loss of her child. We discover the daughter may have killed herself; the parents are forced to revisit their past and the way things came to be. Ibsen’s Rosmersholm centers on the relationship between reluctant rebel John Rosmer and his driven and secretive “friend” Rebecca West, as well as the hypocrisy of the powerful, conservative individuals who interfere with their unconventional union. This new translation firmly plants the story into a modern American setting, as it stays true to Ibsen’s exploration of the motivation for John’s late wife’s suicide and the depth of Rebecca’s involvement.
