The ninth annual Estrogenius Festival is one of New York City’s largest women’s arts festivals. Running October 1 through November 1, 2008, the festival is a celebration of female voices, including theatre, solo performances, music, visual art, dance, events for teens and girls and a benefit for African girls’ education. The New York Times raves that Estrogenius “lives up to its billing as a celebration of women’s work.”This year the festival presents, for its first week, five plays from our Hall of Fame writers.WHAT MOMMY TOLD MEWritten by: Paula CaplanDirected by: Heather LanzaStarring: Laurence Cantor, Clara Hendler, Lara Stoby & Anna WoodBased on a true story, WHAT MOMMY TOLD ME explores the judicial system’s power.—–DEAD SOAPWritten by: Bekah BrunstetterDirected by: Shannon WardStarring: Jason Griffith*, Jennifer Nelson & Bill MootosA bright eyed and hopeful new Soap Star gets an eye opener on his first day on the set – on and off screen.—–TUMBLE JUMBLEWritten by: Andrea LepcioDirected by: Dina EpshteynStarring: Lyndsay Becker*, Jaron Farnham, Amanda Hilson, Erin Krakow & Clancy O’ConnorAn arresting new play about identity and loss.—–FAG HAG/FRUIT FLYWritten by: Montserrat MendezDirected by: Megan DemarestStarring: James Edward Becton*, Judy Chen*, Stacey Raymond*, Eva Rosa, Thomas Rowen, Susan Slotoroff, & Yan XiHow can a writer deal with writer’s block and the ups and downs of her favorite barista’s lovelife?—–CHILD OF THE MOVEMENTWritten by: Cherryl DavisDirected by: Sarah Marina AliStarring: Ashleigh Murray & Tom SouthernIn 1950s Alabama, a young African American woman is ready to challenge the status quo, but will she become the “child of the movement”?—–Co-Executive Producers: Tegan Meyer & Lanie ZipoyWeek 1 Producer: Lanie ZipoyWeek 1 Assistant Producers: Tegan Culler & Jessica KnutsonWeek 1 Lighting Designer: Kia RogersWeek 1 Sound Designer: Ien DeNioWeek 1 Stage Manager: Kari Geddes*Graphic Designer: Joanne Tzanis*denotes a member of Actors’ Equity Association.
