About This Show

BroadwayUSA! presents Emma, featuring book, music & lyrics by Stephen Karam. Pat Birch directs.

At times hilarious and touching, ironic and sincere, this modern version of Jane Austen’s novel is a musical comedy of misunderstandings, packed with quirky humor and unforgettable characters. Winner of the Kennedy Center’s Musical Theatre Award.

Recently graduated from the prestigious Brown University writing program, writer/composer Stephen Karam has already attracted considerable buzz among industry insiders. Emma was performed as part of the 2001 National Kennedy Center/ACTF Festival where it was enthusiastically received, with Artistic Director Gregg Henry hailing the show as “smart,” “funny,” and “sophisticated.” Kate Snodgrass of the Boston Playwrights’ Theatre at Boston University agrees that when it comes to rising musical theatre talents, “Stephen is ‘the real thing’.”
