Opening the Heights Players’ 58th season is the Brooklyn premiere of Horton Foote’s Dividing the Estate. As with many of Foote’s plays, Dividing the Estate is set in the fictional town of Harrison, Texas in 1987. This prize-winning play focuses on the multi-generational Gordon clan, led by octogenarian Stella Gordon. In the late 1980s, the country is facing a shifting economy, and the Gordon clan is facing plunging real estate values and unexpected tax bills. The laughs ensue as Stella’s greedy children prepare to divide her estate … while she is still alive! First presented after the economic downturn of the late eighties, the play seems even more prescient today.
