In the tradition of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, Eric Overmyer’s Dark Rapture is a ‘theatre noir.’ It’s about starting over, escape. Escape from the self, from the sane, from the ordinary. The escape hatch is offered by a raging fire that leaves the Berkeley Hills home of Ray and Julia Gaines a smoldering pile with a charred and unrecognizable corpse amidst the rubble. Whose corpse? Ray’s? A looter’s? And just where was Julia when the house went up in flames? Was it a natural disaster? Fate? And, what happened to the brown-paper parcel that Julia says she left in Ray’s custody? Did it go up in flames, too, with him – or without him? Any number of sinister people want to know.
Presented by manhattantheatresource in association with dirty boy productions.
There is an additional performance on Saturday, August 30 at 2pm.
