About the Show

“Comedians Don’t Cry” – In this new surprise of a work, Carmelita presents oldies but goodies, newbies but cuties! Carmelita Tropicana is a Cuban born writer/performance artist/actress who received an Obie award in 1999 for ‘Sustained Excellence in Performance’ and was named by El Diario: Una de las mujeres mas destacadas del 1998 (One of the notable women of 1998). Carmelita has received numerous writing fellowships including the Cintas Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Mark Taper Forum’s Latino Initiative. In 2000 Beacon Press published the first comprehensive collection of plays and scripts in I, Carmelita Tropicana– Performing Between Cultures, a Lambda Award nominee in theatre, that includes Memories of the Revolution, The Conquest of Mexico as Seen Through the Eyes of Hernan Cortez’ Horse (co written with Uzi Parnes) Chicas 2000, and Milk of Amnesia. She co-wrote with director Ela Troyano Carmelita Tropicana: Your Kunst is Your Waffen, winner of best short at the Berlin Film Festival, 1994. Her collaboration with Marga Gomez, Single Wet Female, directed by David Schweizer was presented at Performance Space 122, and was nominated for a GLAAD Award in Outstanding Theater.
