About This Show

The latest piece from Federico Restrepo’s dance/puppet/theatre company Loco 7 tells the heroic poem of Yurupari Myth: Bokan, The Bad Hearted, from the Colombian and Brazilian Amazon talks about the age old struggle for power between men and women and the conflict between the matriarchal and the patriarchal systems. The men try to dominate the women by scaring them through the music and ritual of Yurupari, the women rebel and like the legendary Amazon Warriors, fight the men to obtain the musical instruments, which are the symbol of political and religious power. In the Indian conception of time cycle, the day will come in which women will be the owners of the sacred flute of Yurupari. The mythological characters of the story changes from gods to vegetables, to animals to human beings, which shows a duality between a bird and a bird-man, or the fruit of a tree that becomes an insect.
