About This Show

KDNY presents autoportraits, an evening of insight, both hilarious and poignant, into the hidden passions
and secrets of the women behind the portraits. Narrative and abstract biographies are performed with live percussion, sopranos and virtuosic dancers.

Highlights include:

Semi-Bitter Suites, choreographed by Kelly Cawthon and Adele Myers, is a collection of sweet and sour physical theater vignettes that invite the viewer to a freak-show self-impersonations.

East Whistwaddle Ladies by Kathleen Dyer is a lighthearted portrayal of the ladies of a sleepy town as they reveal their warped wit, cravings and their spirited reserve accompanied by the Penguin Café Orchestra.

Flowers on the Table by the Open Window by Kathleen Dyer references the many portraits of women found in museums that recall an era when women played a lesser role in society and were often found waiting and wanting. Inspired by the images of Jan Vermeer, who presented pensive women looking out of the window into an unknown, Flowers includes a set designed by Richard Koch.

Sonata in Blue #32 is an abstract dance of freedom and containment. Manipulating lit pictures frames, the dancers reveal snippets of movements struggling inside the rectangle borders, mixing body parts and movement into an atypical and dynamic bid for freedom.
