About this show

Lemon Tree Productions presents the world premiere of A Time to be Born: a 1940's New York Musical as part of the 10th annual New York International Fringe Festival. Bursting with song, dance and more than a few martinis, A Time to be Born celebrates love and ambition in glamorous 1940's Manhattan -- a city ruled by media moguls and scheming socialites. Brutally ambitious Amanda welcomes hapless Vicky to NYC to conceal an illicit affair -- never dreaming that her naïve friend might become her rival. With America on the brink of war, who will risk everything for love? The musical is based on the acclaimed 1942 satirical novel by Dawn Powell, inspired by real-life power couple Clare Boothe Luce (The Women) and Life Magazine publisher Henry Luce. Ernest Hemingway called her his "favorite living writer." Diana Trilling famously said, it was Dawn "who really says the funny things for which Dorothy Parker gets credit." A Time to be Born features music by John Mercurio (Jonathan Larson Award and the Gilman Gonzalez-Falla Commendation Award) and book and lyrics by Tajlei Levis. Marlo Hunter directs. Schedule Monday, August 21 @ 7:30 pm Wednesday, August 23 @ 12:30 pm Friday, August 25 @ 9:15 pm Saturday, August 26 @ 2:45 pm Sunday, August 27 @ 12:00 pm
