Wall to Wall Stravinsky

Wall to Wall Stravinsky is a twelve-hour celebration of Igor Stravinsky, perhaps the greatest composer of the 20th Century. Hosted by Symphony Space Artistic Director Isaiah Sheffer, the free event, in the Peter Jay Sharp theatre, will feature a vast array of the composer’s works, some not heard in public for decades, for orchestra, chamber music, opera, theatre and dance performed by hundreds of artists.

Wall to Wall Stravinsky follows the great iconoclast from St. Petersburg to Los Angeles, from ballet to opera, from neo-classicism to atonal fireworks. Highlights include: an 11 AM opening of the neo-classical Pulcinella Suite, performed by the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony; a staging of the music-theatre work Story Of A Soldier in Isaiah Sheffer’s new, rhymed English version, with Leonard Nimoy as The Devil, Richard Thomas as The Solider, choreography by Carmen de Lavallade, and the Faculty Ensemble of the Purchase Conservatory; Don Byron conducting Ebony Concerto and Elegy for JFK; a piano four-hands version of The Rite Of Spring played by the Bugallo-Williams Piano Duo; Duo Concertante performed by John Oldfather, piano, and Christina Sunnerstam, violin; little-known works created when Stravinsky was 16 years old; his first American work from 1940; and his last composition, in 1965, The Owl and the Pussycat, sung by soprano Lisa Flanagan.
