When it comes to boundaries, she tests them; when it comes to envelopes, she pushes them; and when it comes to new ground, Twyla Tharp – the 2003 Tony Award ® winning choreographer – breaks it. Her masterful choreography takes center stage when Twyla Tharp Dance returns to The Joyce this summer. The company’s program includes the New York premiere of Westerly Round, a contemporary cowboy romance that fuses ballet with abstract square dance; Tharp’s seminal work The Fugue as well as Known By Heart, part of a suite originally commissioned by American Ballet Theatre; and Surfer At The River Styx, a powerfully dramatic ballet that transforms darkness into a beatific apotheosis.
