Lauren Velez stars in the Equity Approved Showcase They Call Me La Lupe. The play tells the story of the dynamic, free wheeling, uncontainable, but brilliant Cuban singer, La Lupe, who was kicked out of her country by Castro, because she represented freedom, unbridled passion — In short, Castro considered La Lupe to be as corrupt and as decadent as America itself. Having no choice she fled to NY where she sang with the likes of Tito Puente and Mongo Santa Maria and became the queen of Latin music starting her own musical Latin revolution. She met with fame and riches and became the first Latin woman to sing in Carnegie Hall. But her spirit, passion and quest for freedom ultimately led to her downfall.
