About This Show

Two-time Tony Award winners Matthew Broderick and Frances Sternhagen star in Larry Shue’s farce The Foreigner, directed by Scott Schwartz, and presented by the Roundabout Theatre Company. Broderick portrays Charlie Baker, a socially phobic Englishman marooned at a Georgia fishing lodge where he poses as a foreigner who speaks no English. Sternhagan plays Betty Meeks, the eccentric widowed proprietor of the Georgia lodge where Charlie vacations with his scheming sidekick “Froggy” LeSueur.

The play tells the uproariously farcical tale of a lovable but socially inept Brit who escapes his stressful life by booking a holiday in backwoods U.S.A. He desperately tries to avoid the local yokels by posing as a foreigner who doesn’t understand a word of English. But the plan hilariously backfires when he becomes the perfect person with whom all share their deepest secrets and schemes.
