About This Show

St. John the Divine hosts a special Eucharist to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the ground-breaking musical Godspell and to honor its creator, the late John-Michael Tebelak, former Cathedral dramaturg. Featuring the cast of last year’s critically acclaimed Off-Broadway revival.

The musical adaptation of the Gospel according to St. Matthew opened Off-Broadway at The Cherry Lane Theatre thirty years ago this week, on 17 May 1971. The groundbreaking musical celebrated its first and second anniversaries, as well as its final performance, with special liturgies at The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. In keeping with this tradition, Sunday’s eucharist celebrates not only the cultural impact the show has made over the past 30 years, but also the remarkable contributions made to St. John the Divine by its creator, John-Michael Tebelak.
