Shakespeare’s immortal knight, Sir John Falstaff, is the most expansive, gregarious, fun-loving, rascally, lecherous, inebriate in all of literature. Only a master like Guiseppe Verdi could possibly bring him to musical life.
Here, Verdi and his librettist, Arrigo Boito, combine elements from Henry IV, and the Merry Wives of Windsor to create the vibrant world of Shakespearean taverns, bordellos, and gaming houses.
