About the Show

Of the three Donizetti operas being performed at The Met this season, the comedy Don Pasquale has been out of the repertoire for the longest time. His 64th opera (and thought by some to be his wittiest) tells of an old man who decides to cheat his nephew out of his inheritance by marrying a much younger girl. At its 1843 Paris premiere, it was sung by four of the greatest singers of the day: Grisi, Mario, Tamburini and Lablache. Since then it is revived whenever a group of singers of that level can be assembled to do justice to one of Donizetti’s most wonderful scores.
