About This Show

“Configuration arranges itself in beautiful form…..
The dancers…were gorgeous…mature and confident
with solid technique.” — Boston Globe

Configuration Dance, headquartered on Cape Cod and directed by Catherine Batcheller and Joseph Cipolla, returns to Symphony Space. The American husband and wife met as principal dancers with the Birmingham Royal Ballet in England, and returned home in 1999 to settle on Cape Cod and start their own company, which showcases ballets by contemporary dancemakers.

Since its founding in 1999, Configuration has been true to its commitment to present original works by contemporary choreographers, both established and emerging. Their repertory includes ballets by Peter Quanz, Edwaard Liang, Royston Maldoon, and Thadeus Davis, to name just a few. Their dancers also have diverse backgrounds and training, representing companies that range from Susan Marshall to the Stuttgart Ballet.

Program:

Dance Sport, a witty, comedic look at dance as a sporting event, created to a collage of music and commentary by Configuration’s resident choreographer Harrison McEldowney

Six Pianos, both elegant and athletic, set to music by Graham Fitkin, choreographed by Graham Lustig, Artistic Director of American Repertory Ballet

A dance of guilty pleasures, passions, and illicit love in the Madame Bovary Pas de Deux by Michael Shannon, danced to an excerpt from Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2

The New York premiere of Joseph Cipolla’s Before All Worlds, to music by the English rock group Radio Head, recognized internationally for their outstanding musicianship. Music will be heard performed by the group itself, with other bands played by The String Quartet, and by pianist Christopher O’Riley in a classical rendering of Radio Head’s music.
