Although the musical revue / original Broadway cast, featuring the music of Leiber and Stoller, is still a hot sell on the regional tour, New Brunswick High School won the rights to produce Smokey Joe’s Cafe in New Jersey.
The NBHS cast features twenty students, two faculty members, and guest artists, The Sheps, the famous male group. New Brunswick High has a tradition of faculty appearing onstage. This year, staff members Constance Carratura (N.Y.U. graduate) and Christian Johnson (who recently appeared on "Showtime at the Apollo") join the students. The Sheps, specializing in 50s music by groups such as the Coasters, have headlined extensively as well as opened for artists such as Diana Ross.
Smokey Joe’s Cafe is an eclectic program of dance and R&B/Rock music such as "Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock," "On Broadway," "Fool Fall in Love," and "Poison Ivy."
